These days the Christmas Jumper is such a cultural norm that it is hard to imagine that only a few decades ago the trendy types would have avoided them like the plague. But somehow Christmas sweaters have become not just acceptable, but cool - the gaudier the better. One Direction wear them, as do Olly Murs, Christine Bleakley, Kanye West, Cheryl Cole, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Matt Damon, Samantha Cameron and Snoop Dogg have all been pictured in various woollen improvisations on the theme.
There is even an ITV sponsored Christmas Jumper day, where National Treasures appear on TV in their favourite Xmas woollens to support charities. This year, 2015, it is on 18th December. Anyone involved is required to Text Santa so that the nation can show their support for those less fortunate than themselves over the festive season.
Who do we blame for this extraordinary trend? Where did the whole plan come from? Actually Christmas jumpers have been around since the late 19th century. However the modern trend is down to our trans-atlantic cousins. Bill Cosby was a modern pioneer of them in the 1980s, and Chevy Chase in the 90s yet even then they were viewed as a bit of a joke.

In 2001 Colin Firth possibly did more for the Christmas jumper than any man on earth, when he took the staring role of Bridget Jones’ heartthrob Mark Darcy. By 2004 Save the Children had teamed up with ITV to create the National Christmas Jumper Day as a one off charity event. Like its BBC counterpart, Red Nose Day (Comic Relief) the National Christmas Jumper Day is a charity event which has continued.
